“Some people light things on fire because they feel like they have to.”

It had been awhile since I’d picked up some non-fiction reads, so I decided to participate in #NonfictionNovember last month and I’d forgotten how much I enjoy the genre. Additionally, I’m pretty far behind on my #BookoftheMonth selections and I’d really like to get caught up on a few of them before the year is over as well.

I had heard a lot about American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land back when it came out (I think it was a July 2017 selection from Book of the Month Club). Monica Hesse weaves each of the main player’s back stories into this mystery, giving the reader a complete overview of this county, its residents, and ultimately, the motive behind all the fires. It’s a true modern day “Bonnie and Clyde” (though not nearly as dramatic of an ending – spoiler: nobody dies).

If you’re a fan of the podcasts Serial and S-Town, this is the book for you as it gives the reader the same thrilling experience. The reader gets a healthy dose of all elements involved in this crazy, unexpected string of crimes. It starts off strong and loses some steam about halfway through, but it was still very informative and an interesting read.

Earlier, I mentioned Book of the Month club. It’s a monthly subscription service where you get to chose up to three books that are shipped directly to your house. Often, you have access to books that aren’t even released yet! Santa gifted me a year-subscription last year, and I have to say it’s been my favorite gift! The company’s customer service is the best there is; they want you to be happy and they will do everything they can to make sure you are! Also, if none of the books sound interesting to you, you can easily skip the month with no problem. Your credit carries over and your subscription is extended! Trust me, you won’t regret joining!
