Welcome back to the bookish version of Six Degrees of Separation. Here’s how it works: Start with the book suggested by Kate over at booksaremyfavouriteandbest, and see where you end up by linking it to six other titles. It’s easy and it’s fun, and no two chains are the same!

This month’s starting point is The Turn of the Screw by Henry James – here’s the synopsis from Goodreads:
A very young woman’s first job: governess for two weirdly beautiful, strangely distant, oddly silent children, Miles and Flora, at a forlorn estate…An estate haunted by a beckoning evil.
Half-seen figures who glare from dark towers and dusty windows- silent, foul phantoms who, day by day, night by night, come closer, ever closer. With growing horror, the helpless governess realizes the fiendish creatures want the children, seeking to corrupt their bodies, possess their minds, own their souls…
But worse-much worse- the governess discovers that Miles and Flora have no terror of the lurking evil.
For they want the walking dead as badly as the dead want them.
I have never heard of this book, so my connections may be way off the chart. (I’m quite literally going off the first books that come to mind after reading the Goodreads synopsis.) This should be interesting!
First Degree
When I read “two weirdly beautiful, stangely distant” children, my first thought immediately turned to Flowers in the Attic by V.C. Andrews. I don’t know how old I was when I read this, but I’m sure I was too young. This is one of those stories that sticks with you…and creeps you out! 🗝
Second Degree
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is another book that immediately came to mind when I read the synopsis. While I had a lot of fun with the first book in the series, the fascination didn’t hold up after that. 🏚
Third Degree
Speaking of series, The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins is one of my favorite series I’ve read. 😍
Fourth Degree
I also really enjoyed The Divergent Series by Veronica Roth, though I’d have a hard time telling you what it’s about now that it’s been a few years since I read it. 😬
Fifth Degree
Another series I read was The Mortal Instrument Series by Cassandra Clare. For the first five books, I was hooked. I lost interest when I caught up and had to wait for the next publication date. 😐
Sixth Degree
Quite possibly the worst series I’ve ever read was The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer. Poorly written and a boring plot, I hated this series…but I did read all of them! 🤷🏼♀️
Next month (November 7, 2020), is a wild card. I’ll start with the book I’ve ended a previous chain with and continue from there!
Haha. Thank you. That made me laugh. I’ve never read the Twilight series but often the most hyped up things aren’t that good really.

There was a time when i was teaching in NY in the 1980s when girls were obsessed with “Flowers in the Attic.” This included girls who were very well read and loved all the children’s classics and award winners and etc. So I read the book myself and found it the veriest nonsense. But clearly that is not the point. One avid reader who was glued to the book had one of the best mothers in the world. (I know them both still.) But that book held her in a powerful grip.

Maybe it was the age? Like they were intrigued because it should be forbidden?!! I don’t know…just a thought.

I’ve never read Flowers in the attic but it’s popping out on this months’ Six degrees. Think I should look into it!
I also thought Twilight was one of the worst series I’ve ever read. But I’ve read all three….. So I guess the aim was still achieved!
Happy Ghostober and here’s my 6 Degrees of Separation – The Ghost Edition

I don’t know. I didn’t mind the first Twilight book. By the fourth one there were things that made me want to throw it at the wall!
Enjoyed your chain!
